Northrop Grumman is about to put 21 of its own satellites on orbit for the Space Development Agency. Liftoff is targeted Oct. 5 at 3:17 a.m. CT from Vandenberg on a SpaceX Falcon 9.

First big batch for Northrop
This is SDA’s fourth Tranche 1 Transport Layer mission since last fall. It is the first to carry Northrop-built buses. Once aloft, the 21 spacecraft will join 63 Tranche 1 sats from York Space Systems and Lockheed Martin.

SDA Director Gurpartap Sandhoo briefed reporters Oct. 1. He expects growing pains at this scale. “Twenty-one is a completely different ball of wax,” he said, compared with checking out a handful of satellites. Northrop also owes another 21 transport sats and 14 missile-tracking spacecraft.
Scale still the hard part
SDA once hoped all 154 Tranche 1 satellites would be up by summer. Supply chains and on-orbit work stretched that plan. York’s July flight checked out smoother. Lockheed’s handover into ops has been slower — only four transferred so far.
Still, Sandhoo said the team is ready for patches and updates after launch. Next, SDA eyes its first Tranche 1 tracking-layer mission in December or early next year. The agency wants the rest of Tranche 1 complete by late spring 2027.
Beyond this flight, Northrop’s test is simple: deliver at volume, then operate at volume. Oct. 5 starts that clock.
